FAQs

Q. i’M new to canicross, HOW CAN I START?

A. You might be interested in a 1-to-1 or group taster where you can test canicross kit, and learn tips and tricks to get you started.

If you and your dog are new to running we’d suggest a couch to 5km programme - you can even find a free plan online. Dogs, like humans, need to train to run long distances. Off lead sprints are quite different to endurance running. So take your time and build stamina slowly.

Our 5km and 10km events are for both beginners and regular runners, but we recommend that you are able to run at least 25 minutes non-stop.

Q. CAN ANY BREED OF DOG RUN?

A. As long as your dog is old enough, fit and healthy - yes. Remember there’s more than one way to canicross. Don’t assume your dog needs to run an ultramarathon. Some dogs are suited to that, others are not. You can canitrek, jog or run. Take on shorter or longer routes, the flats or hill climbs. Find out what works for you and your dog. We recommend consulting with your Vet before getting started.

Q. MY DOG IS REACTIVE, CAN we still join?

A. Yes - we’re inclusive. Canicross is a safe and structured way for your dog to exercise and socialise. All dogs are on lead, and we follow some simple run rules.

Q. do I NEED CANICROSS KIT?

A. We really recommend running in the correct kit. It means you’ll be hands free and you and your dog will feel much more comfortable and in control. Canicross kit includes:

  • Running belt: distributing the pull of your dog to your centre of gravity

  • Bungee line: absorbs any sudden movements from your dog

  • Canicross harness: comfortable, properly fitted

  • Trail shoes (if you’re really off-roading it), comfortable clothing, water etc

We’ve been to a few canicross events where dogs are allowed to run on collars, which is really bad practice. Invest in the right kit – it doesn’t have to be expensive – your dog will thank you for it. If you’re just getting started we have kit for you to borrow, until you find what works.
