Group run guidelines
Most importantly we want you to have fun with your dog. These guidelines help us create a safe and structured environment for everyone and every dog.
GENERAL
Canicross is a physically active sport. We recommend you seek advice from your GP and Vet before starting.
Join us even if it looks like rain!
Our run season is Sep-May, avoiding the hot summer months. However, if the weather is particularly warm we may change the date/time or reduce the pace to avoid dogs overheating.
Classes and events are off-road. You’ll need appropriate trainers and comfortable clothes suited to the weather. Routes may be muddy and uneven, so trail shoes are ideal.
you & your dog
Dogs must be fully mature to run. Typically this is 12 months+ old for smaller dogs and 18 months+ for larger.
Maximum 2 dogs per runner.
You must be in control of your dog - your dog is your responsibility. We are inclusive (canicross can be a great outlet for dogs with anxiety or other issues), but please tell us if your dog likes a bit more space.
Let us know if you or your dog have any medical issues or conditions we should be aware of. This is for the wellbeing of you, your dog and others.
We recommend dogs run in a canicross harness. No leads on collars or restrictive harnesses. We recommend humans run with a running belt and bungee line for your own comfort and safety. If you don't have canicross kit, email us as we have spares for you to borrow: info@runthepackldn.org
Both classes and events are on-lead. We can't accept any off-lead dogs.
We recommend that you have 3rd Party Insurance cover before joining a class or event.
BEFORE running
Don’t feed your dog at least 1-2 hours before or after a run, to avoid the risk of bloat. This is particularly common for larger/deep-chested dogs. Always follow your Vets advice.
Arrive in good time. Your dog will want a sniff.
Dogs can get excited and vocal before a run. Keep them calm and give them some space away from other dogs until we start.
Warm up before an event e.g. brisk walk, dynamic stretching.
Ask us if you’d like any advice about your canicross kit, and how it fits.
DURING THE RUN
Bring water and poo bags. You are responsible for your dogs hydration and picking up after your pooch.
Our pack leaders can provide guidance during the run.
Cheer each other on, and across the finish line.
You should keep ample distance between yourself/dog and any other participants.
If you need to overtake a fellow canicrosser make them aware you’re doing so, e.g. “Dog coming on your left!” If approaching others from behind e.g. walkers or horse riders, politely call out and ask to pass, keeping your dog in close control.
On narrow tracks, give way to on-coming people or vehicles.
We encourage doggy drinks breaks, breathers, and moments to take in the scenery. Please keep your dogs under control, giving space to others.
post-run
Don’t let your dog drink too much too soon.
Allow your dog plenty of time to cool down. A short walk can help.
In warm conditions make sure your car is well ventilated for the trip home. In cold conditions ensure your dog is kept warm.
On muddy days a portable shower can be handy, followed by a dog drying towel/coat.
Don’t feed your dog 1-2 hours after - but you can give a few treats to thank your dog for a great run!
